DNA-Based Test to Identify Natural Genetic Resistance to Avian Leukosis Virus
Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV) is a contagious retrovirus that affects chickens and other poultry. It can lead to tumors, weakened immune systems, poor fertility, reduced hatch rates, and sudden death — especially in birds that are genetically vulnerable to infection.
This test screens for the chNHE1 W38 allele, a genetic variant proven to block Avian Leukosis Virus subgroup J from entering a bird’s cells. Birds with the resistant genotype are considered genetically resistant to ALV-J. This is a genetic screening tool, not a test for active infection.
