DNA-Based Test to Identify Natural Genetic Resistance to Avian Leukosis Virus

Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV) is a contagious retrovirus that affects chickens and other poultry. It can lead to tumors, weakened immune systems, poor fertility, reduced hatch rates, and sudden death — especially in birds that are genetically vulnerable to infection.

This test identifies birds that carry a natural genetic trait linked to resistance against several strains of ALV, specifically subgroups B, D, and E. The trait is based on a variation in the TVB gene, which affects whether the virus can successfully enter the bird’s cells and cause disease. This is a DNA test that checks whether a chicken carries the resistant or non-resistant version of the TVB gene.

It is not a test for current or past infection — it only tells you if a bird has the genetic makeup that may help it resist infecti.

Think of it as a genetic screening tool to help you make smarter breeding and management decisions.

🧾 Why It Matters:
ALV can spread silently in flocks, and birds may pass it to offspring through eggs. There is no cure for ALV — prevention and selective breeding are your best defense. Birds with the resistance trait are less likely to get sick if exposed to certain strains of ALV.

By identifying which birds carry this resistance, you can:

  • Select stronger birds for breeding
  • Avoid using vulnerable birds in high-risk flocks
  • Reduce long-term losses caused by hidden ALV outbreaks

❌ What This Test Does Not Detect:
This is not a test for current infection — it will not tell you whether the bird is actively infected with ALV.

  • It does not detect past exposure or whether a bird is carrying or shedding the virus.
  • It does not replace biosecurity testing — birds with the resistance trait can still become infected, though they’re less likely to show symptoms.

This test is strictly for identifying a genetic trait that affects how likely a bird is to get sick if exposed to ALV.

🧬 Your Results Will Say:

  • Genetically Resistant (R/R):
Bird has two copies of the resistance trait. These birds are the least likely to develop disease from ALV subgroups B, D, and E.
  • Carrier of Resistance (R/N):
Bird has one copy of the resistance trait. These birds may have partial resistance — they may not get sick or may have milder symptoms if exposed.
  • Not Genetically Resistant (N/N):
Bird does not carry the resistance trait. These birds are most vulnerable to ALV and are more likely to develop illness if exposed.
