Ducklings Look Identical
Most duck breeds are impossible to sex visually until they start quacking or developing drake feathers at 8 to 12 weeks. DNA sexing gives you the answer from day one, which is critical when you are raising batches of 20 or more.
Geese Are Notoriously Hard to Sex
Unlike chickens, geese show almost no external sexual dimorphism. Males and females look nearly identical in most breeds. Vent sexing is invasive and unreliable. DNA testing is the definitive answer.
Muscovy Ducks Don’t Quack
Muscovy ducks lack the voice difference that other duck owners rely on for sexing. DNA testing is the only reliable way to sex Muscovy ducklings before the drakes outgrow the hens at 10 to 14 weeks.
Call Ducks and Bantam Breeds
Call Ducks and other bantam duck breeds are notoriously difficult to sex. Their small size and similar markings make voice sexing unreliable. DNA testing is the gold standard for Call Duck breeders.
Breeding Pair Planning
Geese are long-lived and pair-bond strongly. Knowing the sex of your goslings early means you can plan breeding trios and pairs from the start rather than waiting 6 to 12 months to find out you have all ganders.
Sell with Confidence
Buyers pay a premium for sexed ducklings and goslings. Offering DNA-verified sex on your birds builds trust and justifies higher prices, especially for rare or in-demand breeds like Sebastopol geese or Silver Appleyard ducks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sex Muscovy ducklings? They do not quack.
Exactly, and that is why DNA sexing is essential for Muscovy. Since you cannot rely on voice differences, our DNA test is the only reliable method for sexing Muscovy ducklings before the size difference becomes obvious at 10 to 14 weeks.
How old do ducklings or goslings need to be for feather collection?
We recommend waiting until they have some juvenile feathers coming in, typically around 1 to 2 weeks. You need feathers with a visible root or pulp at the base. For very young birds, a blood card from a toenail clip is an easy alternative.
Can I just vent-sex my goslings instead?
Vent sexing is possible but invasive, stressful, and requires experience to do correctly. Even then it is not 100% accurate. DNA sexing is non-invasive (just feathers) and gives you a definitive answer without any risk of injuring the bird.
What about auto-sexing breeds like Pilgrim geese?
Pilgrim geese are one of the few auto-sexing goose breeds where goslings show color differences. But crossbred Pilgrims or non-standard colors can confuse things. If you are unsure, DNA testing gives you the definitive answer.
Can I use the eggshell method for duck or goose eggs?
Yes! Our eggshell DNA sexing works on both duck and goose eggs. After hatching, save the membrane-lined eggshell, let it air dry, and mail it to us. It is a great option if you want to know the sex at hatch without handling the birds.
Is feather collection easy on geese?
Geese are larger birds, so feather collection is actually easier than with small poultry. Simply pull 3 to 5 breast feathers during routine handling. The whole process takes seconds.
What if my results are inconclusive?
In the rare event we cannot get a clear result (usually due to sample quality), we will notify you immediately and retest with a new sample at no additional charge.
