Falconry Training Decisions
Male and female raptors differ significantly in size, temperament, and hunting style. Knowing the sex upfront helps falconers choose the right bird for their quarry and training approach from day one.
Breeding Program Planning
Captive raptor breeding programs need accurate sex identification early to plan pairings, manage housing, and optimize breeding success. DNA sexing eliminates guesswork in immature birds.
Minimal Sexual Dimorphism
Many raptor species, especially owls, accipiters, and juvenile hawks, show little external difference between males and females. Weight overlap makes visual sexing unreliable. DNA is the gold standard.
Rehabilitation and Wildlife
Wildlife rehabilitation centers and conservation programs rely on DNA sexing for record-keeping, release planning, and population studies where invasive sexing methods are not appropriate.
Reverse Sexual Dimorphism
In most raptor species, females are significantly larger than males. This affects what quarry a bird can take, how much it eats, and training dynamics. Female Red-tails can handle rabbits, while males are better suited to squirrels.
High-Value Investment
Captive-bred raptors represent a significant investment of time and money. Knowing the sex at an early age protects that investment and allows you to match birds with the right buyers or training programs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use molted feathers from my mews?
Fresh molted feathers can work if the root or pulp is still intact and has not dried out completely. For best results, collect feathers within a day or two of molting. Pulled feathers during routine handling are most reliable. If in doubt, a blood card during a vet check is an easy alternative.
Why does sex matter for falconry?
In most raptor species, females are significantly larger than males (called “reverse sexual dimorphism”). This affects what quarry a bird can take, how much it eats, and training dynamics. Female Red-tails, for example, can handle rabbits, while males are better suited to squirrels. Knowing the sex helps you plan your apprenticeship or hunting season.
Do you work with rehabilitation centers?
Yes. We work with wildlife rehabilitation centers, zoos, and conservation programs across the country. Contact us for volume pricing and priority processing if you have multiple birds to test on an ongoing basis.
Can you sex owls?
Absolutely. Owls are among the hardest raptors to sex visually. Most species show very little size or plumage difference between males and females. Our DNA test works on all owl species, from Great Horned Owls to Screech Owls.
How young can I test a raptor chick?
You can test as soon as the bird has juvenile feathers developing, typically around 2 to 3 weeks old. For younger chicks, a blood card from a toenail clip during routine handling is an easy and reliable alternative.
What if my results are inconclusive?
In the rare event we cannot get a clear result (usually due to sample quality), we will notify you immediately and retest with a new sample at no additional charge.
