How young can I test my chicks?
You can test at any age — even day-old chicks. As long as you can pull 3-5 small body feathers with the root (pulp) attached, we can extract DNA. For very young chicks, breast feathers or the small downy feathers along the wing work well.
Does it work on Silkies? They’re so hard to sex visually.
Absolutely — Silkies are our most-tested breed. Their fluffy plumage and lack of obvious comb/wattle differences make visual sexing unreliable until 5-6 months. DNA sexing gives you a definitive answer at any age.
Can I use molted feathers I found on the ground?
Molted feathers usually don’t work because the pulp (root) dries out and the DNA degrades. For best results, gently pull fresh feathers directly from the bird. The feather needs a visible fleshy tip at the base.
What if my results are inconclusive?
In the rare event we can’t get a clear result (usually due to sample quality), we’ll notify you immediately and retest with a new sample at no additional charge.
