DNA Sexing; Nylon Swab
$10.00
Avian and Waterfowl DNA Sexing Test
Nylon-flocked swabs are a clean, non-invasive way to collect DNA for gender testing. The flocked tip efficiently picks up epithelial cells, giving consistent results without drawing blood. Customers may collect from either the choanal slit (roof of the mouth) or just inside the cloaca—both sites provide nuclear DNA suitable for PCR sexing.
To collect: open a fresh swab and roll it with firm, gentle contact against the chosen site for 5–10 seconds. Do not wet the swab and avoid feed, feathers, or droppings. Let the swab air-dry for 10–15 minutes before packaging. Use one swab per bird.
What to send: place the fully dried swab in a small, labeled ziplock bag (write a simple ID like “Yellow” on the bag). Ship at room temperature using any mailing method. If the internal control indicates the swab didn’t capture enough cells or contains inhibitors, we’ll contact you to re-collect a new swab so you still get a clear result.
**We do NOT send out swabs, please look at the instructions**
