DNA Testing – Fibromelanosis

Fibromelanosis (Fm) Genetic Test

This test detects the Fibromelanosis (Fm) gene, the mutation responsible for excessive black pigmentation in chickens. Birds carrying this gene develop dark or black skin, bones, connective tissue, and internal organs. The trait is most famously associated with Silkies, Ayam Cemani, Svarthöna, and other hyperpigmented breeds, but it can also be carried silently in non-black birds.

The Fibromelanosis gene is dominant, meaning a bird only needs one copy to express the trait. However, birds with two copies often show stronger or more consistent pigmentation and will always pass the gene to offspring. We aren’t able to test for the amount of copies at this time.

This test allows you to:

  • Confirm whether a bird carries the Fibromelanosis gene

  • Distinguish between birds that do not carry the gene and those that do

  • Make informed breeding decisions when working with dark-skinned or Silkie-influenced lines

  • Identify hidden carriers in birds that may not show obvious external pigmentation

Results clearly indicate whether the Fibromelanosis gene is present or absent, helping breeders maintain, introduce, or avoid the trait with confidence.

*Please do not choose this option for Silkies who do not yet have real feathers. This does not work with chick down. We will need blood spots on coffee filters if they are not old enough to have feathers yet.
